Darrell Alvin Courtney, Sr., 69, of Grand Forks, ND passed away on Thursday, July 11, 2019 at his home in Grand Forks.
Darrell was born on October 15, 1949, in Toledo, Ohio, the son of Wayne Harvey Courtney and Dorothy Juanita Dixon. He attended school in Toledo, graduating from Macomber Vocational High School.
Darrell enlisted in the United States Air Force in March 1969 and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. His assignments took him to bases in North Dakota, Virginia, Indiana, Hawaii, and returning to Grand Forks, North Dakota. After 21 years of service, Darrell retired from the Air Force in May 1990 at the rank of Tech Sargent. Upon retiring from the Air Force, Darrell worked for several companies, but last worked for the North Dakota School for the Blind.
Darrell married Judy (Bakken) in April 1973. Though their relationship turned out to be less permanent than either of them expected, both went on to raise exceptional children, Darrell Jr. and Crystal.
Darrell enjoyed hunting, spending time with his grandchildren, and researching his ancestry. He could spend hours researching the family tree and tracing his ancestry. Darrell was a kind and generous with a great sense of humor. He was fond of cracking a joke or playing a practical joke.
Darrell is survived by his children Darrell Jr. (Linda) Courtney, and Crystal Courtney; sisters Carol Huff and Arlene (Rick) Busold; nieces Melanie Huff and Leslie (Roger) Rivers; nephews Eric (Gerri) Busold and Craig (Jen) Busold, along with 5 grandchildren, many cousins and dear friends.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, Wayne and Dorothy, and brother Gary Courtney.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday, August 12, 2019 in Amundson Funeral Home, 2975 S. 42nd St., Grand Forks. Inurment will be at a later date.
