Conrad F. Giese

Conrad was 97 years old when he died February 27^th, 2021.   He was born in Grand Forks on April 15, 1923, into the family of Adolph and Emma Fuller Giese and was the second of their five children.  For his entire life, he lived in the family home near Euclid Minnesota. Conrad’s Mother died early, leaving Conrad and all of his siblings to operate the family farming enterprise with their dad.    

All five of Conrad’s generation completed high school and more.  Conrad’s graduation was from the University of Minnesota Northwest School Of Agriculture in Crookston in 1942.  Over time, the three sisters moved out and on with their lives, leaving Conrad, Boyd and Adolph on the farm.

Conrad was a caregiver for all living generations of the family.  He doted on the great aunts and uncles, especially Aunt Claire.  She had cared for the family when they were young, and he treated her like royalty.  He looked in on her frequently, he shoveled her snow, and helped her live independently.  He was also attentive to the other older aunts and uncles, maintaining close contact and helping them as needed. When Boyd was in the nursing home, Conrad visited him every day (also stopping to visit with other residents he didn’t know).  When they died, he made sure their graves were properly maintained.  Not surprisingly, as older family members passed away, Conrad became the go-to guy for helping close estates.  

Conrad, was the consummate uncle.  He would travel great distances to perform uncle duties.  When his first grandniece was baptized, he was there - - - in Garlstedt Germany.  When nephews, nieces, grand nephews, grand nieces, and even great grandnieces had school programs, piano recitals, band concerts, graduations, and weddings Conrad was frequently there.  For many years, Conrad made it his practice to celebrate Christmas with his oldest niece and her family no matter where it the world they were.  Everyone enjoyed visits to his farm too.  He would usually cook a great meal and often rolled out the linens, crystal and fine china.  Few did a better job of remembering birthdays, holidays, and other special occasions with cards. 

Conrad was preceded in death by his parents, and all of his siblings, Shirley Sanderson (Otto), Meryl Barry, Joan Guerard (Cecil) and Boyd Giese; one grandniece MeriDee, and one great grandniece, Mollie.  The survivors include five nieces and nephews, six great nephews and nieces, and five great great nephews and nieces.

Funeral Services will be  10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 6, 2021 in Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks.  Visitation will be for 1/2 hour prior to the service.  Interment will be at a later date in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Euclid, Minnesota. 

Memorials are preferred to St. Paull's Lutheran Cemetery or the UND School of Medicine for cancer research.
