Clyde E. Schultz, 92, of Grand Forks, ND, passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2020 at Valley Senior Living on Columbia with his family by his side.
He was born April 30, 1928 on a farm in Todd County, MN, the son of Edward Carl & Louise F. (Helmstetter) Schultz. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Oak Hill Country Church.
Clyde grew up on the farm and attended country school, and then graduated Osakis High School in May of 1946.
On April 1, 1951, Clyde was united in marriage to Irma M. Westphal at St. John’s Oak Hill Church, Todd County, MN.
Clyde was inducted in military service in 1951 and served as a tank driver in the 1st Armored Division stationed at Ft. Hood, TX. He later stationed overseas in Germany. He was honorably discharged in March of 1953.
He was employed at Egger Steel Company in Sioux Falls for 40 years, first as a crane operator, then as a Leaderman. He retired in May of 1993.
Clyde was a member of East Side Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls from 1970 until moving to Grand Forks, ND in 2000. He has been a member of University Lutheran Church since 2000.
Clyde was a fisherman at heart and would take every opportunity to escape to a lake. His cabin on Lake Big Stone was his pride and joy. He was extremely creative and crafty. He could solve complex problems with simple solutions and seemed to be able to fix anything. He also had a talent for wood working and could create beautiful doll furniture out of scraps of lumber. As an avid model railroader, his creation filled the room. His children and their neighborhood friends will always remember winter fun on his icy sledding run creations.
Clyde and Irma loved to travel. Together they traveled to many countries, and he had visited all 50 states.
Clyde was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Irma; children, Steve (Joan) Schultz, Cindy (Mark) O’Brian, Nancy (Loring) Knutson; 7 grandchildren, Heidi (Frerichs) Greenback, Lora (Frerichs) Dunn, Cassandra (Knutson) Owens, Kathryn (Knutson) Hains, Christine (Schultz) Dicken, Gregory Schultz, Barret Knutson; 13 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild.
