Clayton O. Kvasager of Ardoch, ND died peacefully in his sleep on March 29, 2022 at the age of 89 in his home lovingly cared for by his wife, Bernice and daughter Peggi.
He was born in Reynolds, ND on August 28, 1932 and was the 5th child out of 7, to Knute and Olga Kvasager. He grew up on a farm in Lakeville Township, ND, after graduating from Central High School, he attended North Dakota State University for Agriculture. Clayton followed his older brother’s footsteps when he joined the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Through bootcamp in Alaska he became known as an accomplished marksman. After the war, he married his fun loving wife, Bernice on June 2, 1959 and then settled in Grand Forks, ND where he was a driver for Hart Motor Express and retired from Lewis Truck Lines. The old saying” the boy can leave the farm but the farm never leaves the boy,” stays true with Clayton.
They returned to their farm roots when they moved to 80 acres south of Ardoch, ND where they farmed and raised livestock for over 46 years. Clayton loved working the land, from spring planting to fall harvest and spent many hours in his beloved John Deere tractor working the farm. After a chimney fire in their home, Clayton became a proud member of the Ferry-Manvel Fire Dept. and was their President during the 1980’s, he was also a member of the Manvel American Legion Post #299 and a Teamster.
Clayton and Bernice spent 63 years building a life full of great memories. He was very creative and could fix, build, and design anything. Bernice would dream it, and Clayton would build it. They were both very active in their church, even teaching CCD at their home. Together they would go camping and fishing at Lake of the Woods and Cass Lake, snowmobiling with friends was also a common event. Clayton loved music, and him being a self taught musician, he would play guitar and Bernice would sing.
Clayton’s children; Clayton J., Patti, Peggi, Paula, and Audra will always remember him being a strong, courageous, talented father with a soft side. If they acted up in church he would give them what they coined “the church look” which meant “sit still right now!”. He taught responsible life lessons, such as buying hot rod cars and setting up a payment plan to repay him. About the only thing he couldn’t fix was a broken collarbone, broken elbow, and a chipped tooth. Being a grandpa to ten grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren was one of his greatest joys. There was always room on his lap for story time, napping, book reading, watching his favorite team, the Vikings, or cartoons. There was even a spot during his nightly ritual of reading the GFK Herald.
Clayton is survived by his beautiful wife, Bernice; his 5 children, Clayton J. Kvasager, Patti Dickson, Peggi Bork, Paula Odegard, and Audra Hart; his ten grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren; a brother, Arvin Kvasager; and a sister, Lois Cariveau. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Thelmer, Ole, and Elmer, sisters, Janet Torgerson and Theona "Toni" Geatz, and two sisters, Annie and Betty who died in infancy.
