Calvin H. Brockman,83, Grand Forks, ND and formerly of East Grand Forks, MN, died Sunday, November 29th, 2020 in Mapleview Memory Care with loving staff at his side.
Calvin Hugh Brockman was born on November 2nd, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois to Charles and Leonora (Wahnn) Brockman. He moved to Key West, MN at the age of 9 and attended school in Fisher, MN, entering the Navy on Nov. 2nd, 1955. Calvin’s service included basic training at Great Lakes Naval Station, Radioman School at Bainbridge, MD, assignments on the USS Forrestal, USS DeMoines, USS Springfield, duty in Cutler, ME at the Naval Radio Station, 1 year in Vietnam, and an assignment on the USS Wright. In 1959 while stationed in Maine, he met and married the love of his life Agnes Townsend in Eastport, on December 18th, 1959. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1969 and joined the East Grand Forks Police Department on January 1st, 1971, dedicating 25 years to the community he served. Calvin re-enlisted in the Navy November, 1984 joining the Naval Reserve in Fargo ND, before retiring in December, 1994. Among numerous honors Calvin received during his service was one he was most proud of, which was the 1991 North Dakota Reserve “Sailor of the Year,” validating his continued commitment to serve.
Although he battled Alzheimer’s disease for many years Calvin never lost his commitment to serve others. Whether he was walking through Good Samaritan every night to make sure the doors were locked or sitting by someone who was injured until help arrived, his dedication to serve others never ceased.
Calvin was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather always lighting up when one of the grandchildren or great grandchildren walked into a room. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening.
Calvin is survived by his daughter, Lynnette (Mike) Huot, Cass Lake, Mn. His sons, Vincent Brockman, Las Vegas, NV, Donald (Hye Suk) Brockman, Las Vegas, NV, and Wesley (Wendy Olheiser) Brockman, Bend, OR. 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Agnes, February 13th, 2016, his parents, brothers C.G. “Ki” Brockman, Cliff Brockman, and Charles Brockman, and Sisters Millie Kagebein and Myrtle Casmey.
The family would like to thank the staff of Mapleview Memory Care for providing such wonderful care to Cal during the past two years and for making sure that he was not left alone as he traveled his final journey.
Memorial Services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, April 10, 2021 at Amundson Funeral Home of Grand Forks. Visitation will be for the hour before the service in the funeral home. Interment and military honors will follow at Resurrection Cemetery of East Grand Forks, MN.
