Billy Pauley, 97, Grand Forks, died April 11, 2025, at The Villa Memory Care Unit in Crookston, MN. Billy, the son of Lulah and Hebert Pauley was born January 1,1928 in Revena, Kentucky. He grew up in West Virgina with a large extended family working in the coal mines. He joined the Army and completed a 23 year military career which included serving in Vietnam. While stationed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he met Elizabeth Armstrong who worked for the Canadian Government at Fort Osborne. They were married on June 8, 1957. Through their military years they lived in several locations throughout the United States, Canada and Germany. They retired in Grand Forks in 1971 to be closer to family in Winnipeg and to enjoy summers at their cabin in Matlock, Manitoba. Post Military Billy worked at Lavelle Lumber and JR Simplot until his retirement. He took great pride in his role as a father, grandfather and pet owner. He leaves behind a legacy of quiet strength, kindness and resilience.
Billy is survived by his daughters, Judi (Bill) Marvin and Brenda (John) Pauley-Colter of Grand Forks; grandchildren: Doug (Elena) West, Erin (Tyler and Boden) Lunski; Patrick Colter, Eric Colter and Anna Colter; sister, Loretta Davis and family of Ohio; and extended family and friends in Canada.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bette with whom he shared 59 years of marriage. Also gone before him were his in-laws, who welcomed him as one of their own.
His memory will be honored in a private service and his remains will be interred at the Fargo National Cemetery in Harwood ND. We would like to thank the staff of Red River Valley Hospice and The Villa Memory Care Unit for their care and support. Memorials may be made to Circle of Friends Animal Shelter, a cause close to his heart.
A Graveside Service will be held at 12:00pm at Fargo National Cemetery on Friday, April 25, 2025.
