Betty Scheffer

October 3, 1947 — May 26, 2021

Betty J. Scheffer, 73, Grand Forks, passed away Wednesday, May 26, 2017 at home while in the care of her children and hospice of Red River Valley Community Action.

Betty Jean Scheffer was born to Carl Tofsley and Bernice (Bye) on October 3, 1947 in Grand Forks, ND.  Betty graduated High School in Climax, MN, she then moved to Grand Forks to attend Cosmetology School shortly thereafter.   She worked for 20+ years at Ann’s on Demers until the flood of ‘97 and then spent the rest of her career at Hair Etc, followed by the Ultimate Look.  John Scheffer and Betty Tofsley were united in marriage on August 22, 1975 at Augustana Lutheran Church in Grand Forks.  Betty loved her job and the lifelong friends she made over the years, but ultimately chose to retire in 2014 to care for her husband, John, who passed away in 2016.

Betty loved to cook and even more she loved sharing meals with family and friends.  She took great pride in teaching her grandchildren how to cook and loved having them join her to bake for everyone during the holiday seasons.  Betty had a deep Christian faith and a unique positivity about her that affected so many during life’s journey.  Betty joined Immanuel Lutheran church in 1976 and she remained a loyal member until her passing. Betty volunteered in many areas of the church while attending bible studies and church functions.  Her church family was just as important to her as her blood family.   Betty’s Christian faith was strong until the very end as she spent her last breath with Immanuel’s Pastor Craig Fenske while he prayed with her and read bible verses to her at her bedside.   Betty’s spirit, strength, and love will live through her family and fellow congregation members long into the future.

Betty is survived by her brother Carl Tofsley (Lorna); children Shane Atwood (Jennifer), Auburn, WA, Eric Scheffer (Jessica), Grand Forks, Christopher Scheffer (Kayleigh), Grand Forks; step children Monicka Elston (Russ), Spanaway, WA, Shonna Miller (Troy), Tacoma, WA, Kathy Earl, Clyde,TX, and Jeffrey Scheffer (Sue), Auburn WA; grandchildren, Ethan, Emma, Ivy, Cora, Eli, Samuel, Mabel, Gunnar, Shelby, and Morgan; step grandchildren Lance, Sarah, Ashley, Jennifer, and Hannah.  She was preceded in death by her husband, John, and her parents.
