Betty Beckstead

April 12, 1935 — May 31, 2019

Betty E. Beckstead, 84, of Grand Forks, ND passed away Friday, May 31, 2019, at home with her family by her side.

Betty Ellen Sanders was born on April 12, 1935, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Dixon) Sanders in Emerson, Manitoba, where she was raised and educated. After graduation, Betty attended Teachers College and then taught 1st grade for a few years.  Betty and Gary Beckstead grew up 2 blocks from each other and dated for six years before they were united in marriage on December 29, 1956, at the United Church of Canada in Emerson. Their two sons were born there. In 1962 they moved to Van Nuys, California for Gary’s work.  Their daughter was born there. In 1963 they moved to Grand Forks where Gary opened up a Standard Gas Station and they raised their family.

Betty enjoyed painting, fishing, curling and bowling. She deeply loved having her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren surrounding her.

Betty is survived by her husband of 62 years, Gary; Sons: Blake (Lori) and Scott; Daughter: Barb (Cindy); Grandchildren: Tom Beckstead, Nikki Beckstead, Michelle Nelson, Kyle Beckstead, Lindsey Votava and Brett Beckstead; 9 great-grandchildren with another one on the way.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers Jim & Bill Sanders; and grandson Ryan Beckstead.

Memorial service will be held Thursday, June 6, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at Amundson Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the start of the service. Burial will be at a later date.
