Benjamin John Spah, age 33 slept peacefully away at his home in Grand Forks, North Dakota with his beloved dog Videl by his side. His kind, caring soul, and big heart will be remembered and missed by all.
Benjamin was born on March 23, 1987 at Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake, North Dakota to Steven A. Spah and Penny (Smeltzer) Spah. Ben attended pre-school and kindergarten at St. Joseph's in Devils Lake and later went to Elementary School at Lewis and Clark and Lake Agassiz after the family moved from Devils Lake to Grand Forks. He attended Schroeder Middle School and Central High School, graduating early from Community High School so he could join his Father in the family carpentry/construction business in Devils Lake.
Ben worked with his Father Steve, his brother Blake, and Gary Remmen for thirteen years, building many homes in Devils Lake and the surrounding communities. Perfection in Carpentry was their motto, "If you are going to build it, build it right and to last". Benjamin prided himself on his strong work ethic and the carpentry skills he learned from his father.
After his father's death and with Ben's Medical Condition of Cardiomyopathy preventing him from continuing the carpentry work he so loved, he moved once again to Grand Forks in 2017. He returned to work at Taco Johns, an establishment he had worked at in high school. Here he worked along with many supportive co-workers and they became Ben's second family.
Ben loved to fish with his brothers and father. He was taught to hunt by his grandfather and enjoyed the outdoors and wildlife. He spent many hours in the Leeds and Devils Lake areas hunting and fishing with his family. His last deer hunt this past November was with his Mother and family. Ben's pride and joy was his black lab, Videl, who accompanied him on all his adventures and brought him so much comfort in these last years.
Ben also enjoyed socializing, the TV series Dragon-Ball Z, and the movies he was so fond of quoting. He loved his friends and was always willing to help them with any problem. Benjamin had a generous nature, a sensitive soul, and was quick with a smile and joke even when struggling inside.
Ben is preceded in Death by his Father: Steven A. Spah, his uncle: Gary Spah, Grandparents: Henry and Ruby (Zerr) Spah, and his longtime carpentry partner, Gary Remmen.
Survivors include; Mother: Penny (Smeltzer) Spah of Emily MN; Brothers: Bradley Spah of Devils Lake, ND; Blake Spah of Oslo, MN; and Daniel Spah of Grand Forks, ND; his Grandparents: Vance and Alice (Rohrer) Smeltzer of Leeds, ND; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
A private family service (due to the Covid-19 restrictions), will be held at the Amundson Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 14th with a planned internment at the Leeds Lutheran Cemetery when the weather allows. Benjamin will be laid to rest next to his dad. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held then with the time and date to be announced.
