Arthur “Art” Edwin Schroder, 82, Mekinock, died Friday, September 15, 2023, in Altru Hospital.
Arthur was born April 4, 1941, in Grand Forks, the son of Harold and Jennie (Ostad) Schroder. He attended rural county school then attended Crookston High School where he graduated in 1959. Arthur then went on to attend NDSU for a year. He attended Aaker Business School in Grand Forks then attended Minneapolis Business School for accounting and Lutheran Bible Institute graduating from both in 1963. Arthur worked for H&R Block in Minneapolis and then Longyear drilling as an accountant.
In 1965, Art married Joyce Buhaug in Trinity Lutheran Church, Moorhead, Minnesota. In 1966, they moved to Bolivia for four years with World Mission Prayer League where they were missionaries living in the jungle. Afterwards, he went back to work at Longyear for four years. They went back to Bolivia, for another four years where they adopted their son Chris.
Once they returned home, they moved to Mekinock, where they built their home. He worked for Development Homes in Grand Forks for 24 years.
Art loved to plant shrubs and trees and grew his own orchard of various fruits, and nuts. He was a member of the Horticultural Society in Grand Forks. He grew many types of fruits and taught people how to graft trees. He showed there are plenty of types of fruit trees that can be grown in North Dakota and even had a pear named after him; the “Schroder Pear”. He loved to bird watch, and he and his son Chris made bird boxes together to help bring Eastern Blue Birds to the area.
Arthur is survived by his wife Joyce, son Chris (Heidi) Schroder, grandchildren Sara, and Noah, sister Louise (Lee) Paulson, Morgantown, WV; niece Michelle (Ash) Paulson, nephews Mark Paulson, Randy (Marilyn) Schroder, Danny (Heather) Schoder, and great nephew Colt (Arica) Schorder.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Robert.
Graveside service will be held Sunday, September 24, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. at Ness Lutheran Church Cemetery, Mekinock, ND.
