In Loving Memory of Amelia Jane Hulst

Amelia Jane Hulst, 53, of Grand Forks, ND passed away on October 14th, 2019 following a 4 year battle with metastatic breast cancer. She was surrounded by friends, family, and her beloved cats: Nina & Lovely.

Amelia was born in Devils Lake, ND on February 17th, 1966, the daughter of the late Amelia “Pokey” Jane Cavanaugh and Robert “Bobby” Marvin Hulst. Amelia spent her childhood in Warwick, ND and Spirit Lake Nation with special influences from her many siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles and special care provider, Margaret Carlson. She attended several schools including Warwick, Grafton, Four Winds and Devils Lake prior to moving to Grand Forks where she received her GED from Community High School.

After making Grand Forks her new home, Amelia met Conrad Garnett in 1985, and together they had six beautiful children: Christopher, Kimberly, Anthony, Eric, Andrea & Matthew. Amelia placed her children as priority in everything she did and desired to show them the results of hard work. She did this through long-time careers which included nearly 20 years at Simplot and over 13 years with the Grand Forks Circle of Friends Humane Society.

Next to her children and grandchildren, Amelia’s love for animals was evident in every aspect of her life. In addition to her work at the shelter, Amelia provided foster care to multiple animals, many of which found permanent residence in her home! She loved traveling to various zoos, going to rummage sales, secret word search puzzles, games, movies and spending time with family. During her battle with cancer, Amelia made it a point to support others who were fighting alongside her by attending as many cancer events, benefits & fundraisers as she could. She will be remembered by her big heart, her desire to serve others and her strength, faith, & resilience.

Amelia was preceded in death by her parents Amelia Jane Cavanaugh and Robert Marvin Hulst, grandparents Mabel and Clarence Cavanaugh, and younger brother Raymond Richotte. She is survived by her children Christopher (Ivy) Garnett, Kimberly (Filipo) Williams, Anthony (Lisa) Garnett, Eric (Bryanna) Garnett, Andrea Garnett and Matthew Garnett ,the father of her children Conrad Garnett, and many siblings Robert (Michelle) Hulst, Tina (Mike) Hulst, Corina Sogge, Marie Richotte, Murle (Angie) Richotte, Lisa Richotte, Robby (Krissy) Richotte, Rodney (Charlie) Hulst, Patricia Bjornson, Connie (Dave) Larson, Marvin (Jan) Hulst, and several grandchildren. The family would also like to send a special thanks to her longtime friend Becky Kay, St. Marys, Gospel Outreach Ministries, Altru Cancer Center and the care provided by Altru Hospice.

Memorials are preferred to "Circle of Friends Humane Society" in Grand Forks.
