Alvera Georgia Vigness, 95, of Grand Forks passed away Saturday, September 25th at Northwood Deaconess Health Center due to complications from hip surgery. She was born at home in Northwood, ND on June 17th, 1926, and was the only child of Gust and Alma Halverson. Alvera grew up in Hatton, ND and Grand Forks where she graduated from Central High School.
Following High School, she married Albert (Abbie) Moen July 23rd, 1943, in Grand Forks. Alvera and Abbie raised three children: Ron, Doug, and Debbie. Alvera was very active, holding many offices in her church and various organizations. She enjoyed traveling, bible studies, singing in church, and had a special love of flowers. Alvera cherished her membership with Faith Evangelical Free Church for the past 30 years. She was known as an excellent cook and homemaker. In 1956 at the age of 29, she was crowned Mrs. North Dakota. After 46 wonderful years of marriage, she lost her husband Abbie. She later married Edwin Olsen in 1995 and enjoyed travel and companionship for six years before his passing. In 2005 she married Lester Vigness from Climax, MN, and they too shared several happy years together. Alvera always commented on how she was so blessed to have had three wonderful husbands who were all “absolute Gems”.
Alvera is survived by sons Ron (Cookie) of Maricopa, AZ; Doug (Linda) of Grand Forks; and son-in-law Rick Capes of Grand Forks. She was blessed with eight grandchildren: Harro Moen of Maricopa; Janssen (Veronica) Moen of Fort Irwin, CA; David Moen of Grafton, ND; Chris (Marilee) Moen of Grand Forks; Kailey (Michael) Potratz of Fargo; Jason Capes (Ashley Lizakowski) of Grand Forks; Jennifer Capes (Trevor Grainger) of Grand Forks; and Janelle (Bryan) Kuntz of Grand Forks; and ten great-grandchildren. To Alvera, family meant everything and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She was heartbroken to have lost her loving daughter Debbie at age 44.
Funeral Service will be held at Amundson Funeral Home on Friday, October 1st, 2021 at 2:00 PM with visitation one hour prior. Interment to follow at Memorial Park North Cemetery in Grand Forks.
