A. Ray Gibbens, 80, formerly of Calvin / Sarles, North Dakota died Thursday, December 20, 2007 at Northwood Deaconess Health Center, Northwood, North Dakota. A. Ray Gibbens was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on, January 21, 1927 to Herman and Flora (Doby) Gibbens. He was raised and educated in the Calvin / Sarles, ND area and graduated from Devils Lake High School. Ray was an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. He attended Lake Region Junior College, and the University of North Dakota. Ray operated a family farm near Calvin since 1954. He was very active in the Masons in Calvin, Sarles, and Langdon. While he was a member of the American Legion Post #276, Brumwell-Grey of Sarles, he held offices of Post Adjutant & Commander; District Commander and Region Vice-Commander. He is survived by children, Ron (Helen) Gibbens, Grand Forks, Cathy (Mike) Kvasager, Bonney Lake, Washington, Bob (Amy) Gibbens, Beloit, Kansas, and Mike (Michelle) Jones, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 7 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; a sister, Hazel (Otto) Strobel, Scottsdale, Arizona; several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Neil, and a sister, Violet.
