Elaine L. Strand, 93, Grand Forks, died Friday, Mar 28, 2008 at Altru Hospital. Elaine was born to Robert George and Jeanette (Sieberg) Lund on April 11 , 1914 at Mohall, N .D .She attended school in Mohall and graduated in 1931 as valedictorian. She attended St. Olaf College for 1 year, then graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1936 where she was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority, Masquers, Singers, Orchesis, and served as PEA President and was on the WSGA and WAA Board, serving as chairman of the National WAA Convention. She later took library courses at the University of North Dakota. Elaine Strand was a teacher in the public schools of Watertown, S.D., Fairbault, Minn, and Minot, N.D., and later served as a reference librarian at the Grand Forks Public Library for twenty years. On July 28, 1940, she was married to Albert Strand in Mohall and lived in Minot until moving to Grand Forks in 1949. Albert died in 1976. In Grand Forks, she served as president of the American Association of University Women, was a 50-year member and was honored locally and nationally for significant service. In the Presbyterian Church, she served as an Elder, Deacon, president of Women's Association, and principal of the Primary Sunday School Dept. for many years. In Girl Scouting, she served as a Girl Scout leader for seven years and served four years on the Girl Scout Council as Program Chairman and Neighborhood Chairman. She served as president of the Grand Forks Woman's Club (North Dakota Federation); was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, North Dakota Library Association, and a local library association, Grand Forks County Historical Society, Retired Teachers, Board of Directors of the Grand Forks Senior Citizens Association and Thursday Book Club. She served as Worthy Matron of Acacia Chapter #12, Order of the Eastern Star, was on the Board of Rainbow for Girls and received and the Grand Cross of Color. She was a member of Past Matrons of OES and served one year as president. She is survived by daughter Shelby Elaine (Stephen) Harken, and granddaughter, Stephanie (Adam) Suedel, and great grandson, Daniel. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Alice (Merle) Parker.
