H. Gladys Bye age 90, Grand Forks, ND, formerly of Gilby, ND, passed away on Monday, April 14, 2008 at Valley Eldercare in Grand Forks, ND. Gladys Brusegaard was born on March 3, 1918 to Thomas T. and Theodora (Johnson) Brusegaard in Gilby, ND. She was the middle child of 11 brothers and sisters. (5 older and 5 younger) She graduated from Gilby High School and attended Mayville (ND) State Teachers College and Moorhead (MN) State College. She graduated with her teaching certificate and began her career teaching in Wheatfield Township, a rural school about 6 miles south of Gilby. The following year Gladys started teaching at Pleasant View School, which was several miles east of Northwood, ND. She taught there for a couple of years until a teaching position opened up in Gilby. On February 20, 1943, Gladys was united in marriage with Arel E. Bye. They lived in Gilby and eventually Grand Forks, until the time of his passing in 1999. Gladys was confirmed at the Honeyford (ND) Lutheran Church and later joined the Gilby Presbyterian Church after her marriage. She was active in the Sunday School program and Young People's Society at the Gilby Church. Gladys was a member of the Gilby Hobby Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Son's of Norway. She was a volunteer at the Valley Thrift Shop and the United Hospital (Altru) Gift Shop. Left to mourn her passing are her children: son, Alan (Renae) Bye, Grand Forks; daughter, Mary Anne (Michael) Iwan, Grand Forks; 6 grandchildren, Nikki (Chad) Jehs, Karissa (Ryan) Fawver, Timothy (Carrie) Iwan, Karyn (Justin) Nelson, Brandon (Sara) Bye, and Anthony Iwan. She also leaves behind 10 great-grandchildren Tyler, Rylee, Raynee, Abbie, Hunter, Logan, Nash, Annabella, Noah and Brody; 1 sister, Doris Burket, Grand Forks, twin brothers Ray Brusegaard, Grand Forks, Richard Brusegaard, Las Vegas, NV and several nieces and nephews. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, husband-Arel, sisters-Adelaide Hensrud, Margaret Graves, Thelma Moody, Dorothy Matteson, and brothers-Art Brusegaard, Conrad Brusegaard and Ted Brusegaard. Special recognition goes to the staff on the 300 unit of Valley Eldercare who cared for Gladys and helped make her last days enjoyable.
