Orval W. "Ozzie" Nord, 86, of Grand Forks, died Sunday, June 15, 2008, at the Northwood Deaconess Health Center. Ozzie was born May 15, 1922 in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota and graduated. from D.L. High School in1940. He attended the University of N.D. before enlisting in the Army in 1942. He served in the Pacific Theater in World War II and participated in the campaigns of Okinawa and Saipan. After the war he studied pre dentistry at the University of North Dakota where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi Social Fraternity. He was also a member of the post war club hockey team in 1946 and 1947. In 1949 Ozzie married Ruth McGuigan and they resided in Philadelphia until his graduation from Temple University School of Dentistry in1952. At Temple he was a member of Delta Sigma Delta International Dental Fraternity and was elected to the International College of Dentists for dentists outstanding in the field of dentistry as well as in their community. Ozzie served as President of the Grand Forks City Dentists, the North East District Dental Society and later was elected President of the N.D. State Dental Association. His crown and bridge work earned him membership in Omicron Kappa Upsilon, a National Honor Dental Society. In 1992, he was most honored guest at the State Dental Convention. He also served as President of the YMCA in 1964. A fifty year member of Calvary Lutheran Church, he enjoyed taking the Scouts camping at Arvilla Park. He was an enthusiastic outdoorsman and was the first North Dakotan to shoot a deer with a bow and arrow when North Dakota established a season for bow hunting. In later years his favorite hobbies were bridge (he became a Life Master), gardening, and golf. He was North Dakota State Senior golf champion in 1974. His children and grandchildren gave him great pleasure. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters and 4 brothers. His wife survives as well as three children Jane Nord/Unger (Dick) of Montevideo, Minnesota, Bruce Nord (Susan) of Grand Forks, and Gordy Nord (Lauri) of Bismarck. Grandchildren; Michael, Christy, Katy, Tom, Derek, Lexi, and Jon. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. Memorials are suggested to youth programs of Calvary Lutheran Church or the Grand Forks Park Board Youth Programs, or a charity of your choice. MEMORIAL SERVICES: 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2008 at Calvary Lutheran Church 1405 9th Street South in Grand Forks. Military Honors will also take place.
