North Dakota Durum Icon Sam Kuhl was called home by Angels on December 28, 2007. Sam was born to Henry and Marie (Blume) Kuhl on January 23, 1918 on a farm in Stanley Municipality north of Winkler, Manitoba. Sam attended grades 1-8 in a one room one teacher school in the village of Gnadentahl, grades 9-10 were by correspondence, grades 11 -12 in Winkler. He received a BS in Agriculture from University of Manitoba in 1940. He taught school in Northern Manitoba. He worked for Ogilvie Flour Mill for 17 years in quality control. He married Alma Peitsch May 23, 1942. He worked for North Dakota Mill starting in 1957 as manager of quality control, then production manager and then assistant manager in 1967. He was appointed Manager of the North Dakota Mill in 1971 by Governor Art Link until his retirement in 1988 after 31 years. In association with the ND Wheat Commission, US Wheat Associates & Northern Crops Institute he had the opportunity for overseas travel promoting US Wheat, conducting seminars and consulting with flour mills in Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Sudan, Algeria, Morocco, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Angola, South Korea, Twain, Singapore, Chile, Venezuela, Honduras and others. He was involved in many organizations including Association of Operative Millers, Cereal Chemists, National Millers Federation, US Durum Growers, Salvation Army, Boy Scouts & Kiwanis. During his school years he stoked the school furnace for 25 cents an hour with the proceeds he bought a violin from T Eaton's catalog. He was a self taught violin player. He enjoyed playing church hymns, polka's & western music. Sam & Ken played together every Sunday night. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Alma in 1983, two children and his sisters Anne & Ella. Survivors are Kenneth (Janet) Grand Forks, Marlene (Steven) Thomas Seattle, William (Jeanne) Grand Forks, Wesley (Cari) Kansas City and Darryl (Jean) Houston. 15 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Brothers Henry, Dave, John and sister Evelyn Dyck. Memorials: in lieu of flowers, memorials a preferred to the Salvation Army, or the Northlands Rescue Mission.
