Sonia Agnes Thompson, 76, passed away on Monday, May 12, 2008 at the Palliative Care Unit, Merit Care South in Fargo, North Dakota surrounded by her family. She bravely fought a 6-month battle with cancer. Sonia was the wife of Allan C. Thompson, Grand Forks, and mother of Carol Messmer, Grand Forks, Barbara (Russ) Nelson, Moorhead, Minnesota, Patricia (Terry) Trojahn, St. Louis, Missouri, and Allan Thompson, Jr. (Robin), of Bloomington, Illinois. She was Grandmother to Scott (Rachel) Messmer, Danika (John) DeMers, Kyle Messmer, Brian, Michael, Sonia and Anna Trojahn, Matti and Ali Nelson and Jessica, Rachel and Abigail Thompson. She was Great Grandmother to Matthew and Logan Messmer and Maris DeMers. Sonia was born February, 1, 1932 in Drayton, North Dakota, the daughter of Olaf and Agnes Hanson of Pembina, North Dakota. She graduated from Pembina High School in 1949. On January 6, 1952, she married Allan C. Thompson of Walhalla, North Dakota, at the Pembina Lutheran Church. They were both students at Concordia College and in 1953 moved to Walhalla. In 1967 they moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota. Beginning in 1978, Sonia and Allan spent their winters in Mesa, Arizona. In 1981, Sonia, along with her husband and daughter Barbara attended the Arizona School of Real Estate where she received her Arizona and North Dakota licenses and began working as an agent for Fladland Real Estate. Sonia loved watching her children and grandchildren participate in the various activities they were involved in. She will be remembered by many for traveling to golf tournaments all over the country. She always put her family first but enjoyed Bridge, Golf, Shopping and lunch dates with her many friends. Sonia is survived by her husband of 56 years, 4 children, 12 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and her beloved Schnauzer, Gena. She is also survived by her 2 sisters, Carol Schwinkendorf, Scottsdale, Arizona and Helen Helgeland, Longmont, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Harold Hanson of Grinnell, Iowa. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 16th at Calvary Lutheran Church in Grand Forks, North Dakota at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Walhalla, North Dakota Cemetery at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 17th. Memorial donations may be made to Mayo Clinic Cancer Research Fund.
