Helen Marie DeHaan, 88, Grand Forks, ND, passed away Friday, December 5, 2008, in Altru Hospital of Grand Forks, ND. Helen Marie (Barrett) DeHaan was born July 17, 1920, in Garfield Township of Lyon County, Iowa, the daughter of Vinal and Elnora (Fisher) Barrett. She was raised and educated near Luverne, MN. She graduated from St. Cloud Teachers College then taught high school at Hardwick, MN. Helen married Benjamin Francis DeHaan on January 25, 1942 in Yuma, AZ. They lived in many cities across the United States throughout a military career. After retirement in 1969 they moved to Baudette, MN and to Grand Forks, ND in 1985. Colonel Benjamin DeHaan died December 8, 1995. Helen enjoyed her family, travel, golf and cards (she was a Master Bridge Player). She also enjoyed fishing and the outdoors, and was a member of the Ladies Moose Lodge of Baudette, MN. Survivors include sons, Lynn (Sandra) DeHaan, San Antonio, TX, Steve (Dorrie) DeHaan, Grand Forks, ND and Rick (Barbara) DeHaan, Detroit Lakes, MN; grandsons, Michael, Darrin, Kevin, John, James, Christopher and Matthew; great grandsons, Clayton "CJ", Benjamin and Eli; sisters, Barbara Wilfahrt, New Ulm, MN and Judy (Ken) Hughes, Klamath Falls, OR, and brother, Robert Barrett, Salinas, CA. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents; brothers, Vinal Barrett, Jr., Boyd Barrett, and a sister, Betty Barrett Voogd. She will be missed.
