Dorothy Marie Herman, 83, passed away on Friday May 8, 2009 at Woodside Village of Valley 4000, in Grand Forks. Dorothy Marie Pleiss was born August 14th, 1925 in Albert Lea, Minnesota, the daughter of Bernard & Doris (Cooper) Pleiss. Dorothy attended school in Albert Lea, and graduated from the Albert Lea High School. She moved to Grand Forks in 1943 and worked for the Western Union. While living in Grand Forks she met her husband Harvey Carl Herman. Dorothy and Harvey were married June 21, 1947 in Atlanta, GA. Dorothy dedicated her life to her family and raising her children as her husband served in the US ARMY during World War II and the Korean War. Their service took the family to bases in Japan, Germany, Georgia, Virginia, and Michigan. Upon Sergeant Major Herman's retirement in 1969, The Herman Family returned to Grand Forks in 1970 and lived many of those years at 616 Walnut Street. Dorothy was an active member of the United Lutheran Church and was involved in the Church Women United, Friday Fellowship and numerous school functions with her children. She also was very active volunteering at Belmont School and to local scout troops. Dorothy enjoyed sewing, quilting, playing cards, family vacations & baking; often feeding her children's friends cookies and kool-aide on hot summer days. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey in March of 1995, and her sister Janet Huber of Perham, MN. She is survived by her children: Vickey Snyder, Mountain City Tennessee, Steven Herman, Cologne, Minnesota, Elizabeth Malm (Perry), Grand Forks, ND & Matthew Herman (Amy), Orono, MN: Nine Grand Children: Amber, Becky, Kelly, Ben, Marty, Ted , Amanda, Silas & Elijah Plus: Five Great Grand Children; Brother Robert Pleiss, Albert Lea, MN, and Sisters; Lois Schwinefus, Ostrander, MN & Joy Kinney, Kearney, MO.
