Ted W Paur

Ted Paur, 89, Gilby ND, loving husband to Rosalie (Houska) Paur for 65 years and proud father to Gary (Ruth) Paur (Gilby), Gail (Rick) Confer (Grand Forks), Dawn (Gene) Korynta (Gilby), Lance (deceased) and Joy (Jay) Ryan (Georgetown, MN) died on June 29, 2009. Ted lived in Pisek, ND with his Aunt Barbara and Uncle Joe Kouba after his mother's death. When he was seven years old his father married Dorothea Schwartz. Ted and his brother Clifford moved to the farm at Anamoose where Bill and Dorothea continued the family with the additions of Donald, Fern and George. When Ted was 16 he moved to the state of Washington and worked on squash farms and apple orchards. In 1940 he enlisted in the Navy with his brother Clifford and served as a Machinist Mate 2nd Class. Clifford and Ted served on the Navy Ship Greyhound and later the USS Yorktown together until it was sunk in the Battle of Midway. Ted went on to serve on the USS West Virginia. He was involved in every major naval engagement in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during WWII and received 7 Battle Stars and several citations. He survived the Battles of Iwo Jima, Coral Sea, Midway, Surigao Straits and was with the first occupation forces that landed in Japan. Ted was proud to be a farmer and took on the challenge of working the alkali east of Gilby for over 50 years. He loved spending time with his wife Rosie - his sweetheart - and the rest of his family. As Sailor and Sweetheart they have set the bar high for family in their values and principles in life. He was an excellent card player and voracious reader. Visitation will be Thursday, July 2, 2009 from 5-7PM at St. Timothy's Catholic Church in Manvel, ND. Visitation will re-commence at 9:30AM, July 3 and will be followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Grand Forks, ND. Military Honors will be conducted graveside. .
