Hazel N. Steenerson, 98, Grand Forks, ND, died Wednesday, July 15, 2009 in the Pioneer Memorial Care Center of Erskine, MN. Hazel Norma Cook was born September 6, 1910 in Backoo, ND the daughter of Edwin and Barbara (Surerus) Cook. She was raised on the family farm at Backoo and attended a one-room school near their home. Hazel graduated from high school in Cavalier, ND and attended Aaker's Business College in Grand Forks. After graduating from Aaker's, she was employed at the Implement Dealers Insurance Co. in Grand Forks. Hazel later became the head teller at First Federal Savings and Loan, and ended her career in finance with the Gate City Bank of Grand Forks. Hazel married Cloyd Steenerson on September 5, 1936 in Grand Forks. They lived on Maple Ave. in the Lincoln Drive area for 57 years before their home was lost in the 1997 flood. Hazel enjoyed gardening, growing roses,bird watching and was an avid walker. She was also active in United Lutheran Church Circle and Bible Studies, and loved to spend time at Camp Shalom during the summer months. Cloyd Steenerson died March 29, 2002. Survivors include son, James (Avis) Steenerson, Lengby, MN; daughter, Barbara (Gerard) Porter, Lakewood, CO; 4 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; sisters, Ilma (Allen) Gazaway, Woodland, CA, Lillian (Clarence) Dietrich, Cedarburg, WI; seven nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Victor Cook and a sister, Leola Kemnitz.
