David J. Johnson, 59, of Grand Forks, died at Altru Hospital on October 13, 2009 from complications of Acute Mylegenous Leukemia. Dave was born August 10, 1950, in Grafton, ND, the son of Carl and Freda Johnson. David was raised in Grand Forks and attended GF Central High School. Dave worked as a carpenter for several years, before working for American Crystal Sugar in 1980, where he worked as a Sugar End Foreman until his retirement in 2008. Dave enjoyed family gatherings, listening to music, traveling and quiet weekends at his Maple Lake cabin. He loved to fish, especially after he found a walleye hole at the lake. Dave was a quiet, kind, compassionate man who took great pride in his family and their accomplishments. Dave is survived by his wife of 31 years, Debra; sons, Jerrod Johnson of Minneapolis and Rory Johnson of Larimore; granddaughter, Taryn McCann; brother, Philip Johnson of Queens Creek, AZ; sisters, Linda (Harold) Holweger of Grand Forks, Carlene Moe of Marion, IA, and Alice (Larry) Bell of Billings, MT. Dave was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Karen Hendrickson; brothers-in-law, Harvey Schock and Larry Moe; nephew, Jeff Hendrickson; and niece Nicole Schock. The family would like to thank Dave's sisters, family, friends, co-workers, and Pastor Thomas Colenso for all of their support. The family would like to extend their appreciation for the care provided by the medical professionals at the Altru Cancer Center and Hospital, and the St. Mary's and Methodist Hospitals in Rochester, MN. FUNERAL SERVICES: 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 17, 2009, at University Lutheran Church 2122 University Ave. in Grand Forks. VISITATION: the hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
