Dagmar R. Satrom

March 28, 1919 — October 26, 2009

Dagmar ("Duds") Satrom of Grand Forks passed away peacefully at home on Monday, October 26, 2009 after an extended illness. Dagmar Rosemine Johnson was born March 28, 1919 in Hot Springs, AR, the fifth of eight children of Christian and Cornelia Johnson. Raised in Grand Forks, she was baptized and confirmed at United Lutheran Church. She graduated from Grand Forks Central High School and attended the University of North Dakota before moving to Los Angeles, CA where she was employed with Highland Laboratories. On September 10, 1943, Dagmar was united in marriage to Merle L. Satrom in Corpus Christi, TX. Following his service in the Navy, they returned to Grand Forks and raised their family. Duds was a life-long member of United Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School. She was an avid curler, participating in national competitions and serving as president of the GF Scotties Curling Club. She and Merle shared their enthusiasm for curling with the entire family. Duds loved spending summer days with family and friends on Lake Bemidji. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend, filling these roles with grace, wisdom and a joyful spirit. Faith and family were most important to her. Her home was the gathering place for holidays and celebrations, and the memories created there are cherished by her family. Duds used to say that she was blessed with good health so that she could serve others and, until her illness, she was a caregiver to many friends, relatives and shut-ins. Dagmar is survived by: children Donn (Linda) Satrom, Roseville, MN; Carol Christiansen, Grand Forks; Merrie (Jerry) Rolland, Grand Forks; Larry (Denise) Satrom, White Bear Lake, MN; five grandchildren: Carrie Christiansen, Kelly Rolland (Matthew) Ask, Ryan Satrom, Jason Rolland, Brynne Satrom and great-grandchild Carter Rolland Ask; sisters Adelie (Tuts) Miley, Grand Forks and Evangeline (Babe) Barquin, Temple Terrace, FL; and many wonderful nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Merle in 1984, infant son Vern Robert, grandson Kyle Christian Satrom, brothers Col. Vernon Johnson and Truman Johnson; sisters Valborg (Vee) Thompson, Oda Johnson and Constance (Connie) Garske. The family thanks Altru Hospice for their wonderful comfort, care and kindness extended to their mother.
