Shirley A. Appell, 74, Grand Forks, died Friday, November 6, 2009 in Valley Memorial Homes Eldercare Center, Grand Forks after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Shirley Ann Cote was born to Delmen and Edna (Olson) Cote on August 22, 1935 at Thief River Falls, Minnesota. She attended school in Thief River Falls, and graduated from Lincoln High School. Shirley and James Appell were united in marriage on November 28, 1953 in Thief River Falls. They moved to Grand Forks in 1954. Jim Appell died October 13, 1987. Shirley was employed for many years at the Good Samaritan Nursing Center in East Grand Forks, Minnesota, and also the Senior Citizens Center in East Grand Forks. Shirley and Jim's home was always open to family and friends. They enjoyed camping and spending time with their grandchildren. After Jim's death, Shirley enjoyed traveling to see friends and family. She is survived by her children, Bob Appell, Woodward, OK, Vicky Brentin, Gig Harbor, WA, Sandy Kemnitz, Grand Forks, ND, Tammy Obregon, Estherville, IA , Darcy (Don) Mutscher, Grand Forks, and Tim (Angie) Appell, Wahpeton, ND; 15 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren; siblings, June (Lewis) Larson, Punta Gorda, FL, Wendell Cote, Minneapolis, MN, Luverne Cote, Chicago, IL, Russell (Clara) Cote, Jacobson, MN, Elaine Meagher, Pembina, ND, Vonnie Hutmaker, Fargo, ND, Cathy Gallus, Matteson, IL, Barb Secord, Grand Forks, ND, Phil (Sue) Cote, East Grand Forks, MN. She is preceded in death by her husband, James; a granddaughter, Ashley; and a brother Luverne Cote. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 11, 2009 in St. Mary's Catholic Church, 216 Belmont Rd., Grand Forks. Visitation: will be from 5 to 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. Prayer Service Tuesday, November 10, 2009 in Amundson Funeral Home, 2975 S. 42nd St., Grand Forks, and for the hour prior to the mass in the church. Interment: Memorial Park South Cemetery, Grand Forks.
