Melvin E. Peterson, 92, Grand Forks, ND died Friday, November 6, 2009 in Altru Hospital surrounded by his family. Melvin was born July 21, 1917 in Larimore, ND; the son of Arthur and Alma(Johnson) Peterson. He was raised and educated in Larimore and Grand Forks. Following his education, he began working for the Great Northern Railways. Melvin served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater with the U.S. Army during WWII. Following the war, he returned to Grand Forks where he continued his work for the Great Northern Railways and later Burlington Northern Railroad. He retired in 1977. Melvin married Violet Achttien on November 18, 1945 in First Methodist Church in Grand Forks Melvin was active in the Grand Forks Boy Scouts earning the honor of Eagle Scout. He also was a member of the Sunrise Kiwanis, Odd Fellows Lodge and involved in various church activities. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and spending time at their cabin on Birch Beach at Lake of The Woods. He treasured times that he spent with his family, grandchildren and later great grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 64 years Violet Peterson along with daughter, Sharon (Jim) Holter, Grand Forks; son, David Peterson, Grand Forks; grandchildren, Jeffrey (Becky) Holter, South Range, WI and Kari Holter, Grand Forks; great grandchildren; Katie Holter, Emily Holter and Nathaniel Holter all of South Range, WI. A special nephew James (Geralyn) Peterson, Grand Forks. Also Brother-in-laws John (Char) Achttien, Donald Achttien, and Sister-in-law Carol (Duane) Knutson; and several nieces and nephews. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Lyall (Norma)Peterson and sister-in-laws RosaLee Achttien and Vickie Achttien-Sarro.
