Mary Ellen Wier

December 12, 1949 — December 7, 2009

Mary Ellen Wier passed away in her Grand Forks home on December 7, 2009. She was born in the small town of Deleon Texas to Maxine Henderson Wier and David Truett Wier on December 12, 1949. She graduated from Deleon High School and went on to study dance at both Interlochen Fine Arts School in Michigan and Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. She was married to Roger Craig and Steve Saari. Mary Ellen touched many people's lives through her warm and gracious spirit. Three of her main loves were dance, animals, and opera. She was the director of the North Dakota Ballet Company for 26 years. Her dedication to the company, her students, and all performers were an inspiration. Mary Ellen's home never lacked the presence of animal friends. She cared for and loved many cats over the years. Because of her deep connection with animals she also took care of lots of pets throughout the community who will miss her gentle touch. Opera could often be heard in her house, and she particularly loved "The Three Tenors". Most of all, Mary Ellen's heart was always there for people. Her work at Special Olympics was so important to her. She shared her love with people there who will remember her fondly. With her lilting Southern accent she always had time to share a smile with anyone who came her way. She will be deeply missed by all who had the good fortune to know her. Mary Ellen was preceded in death by four siblings and her parents. She will be lovingly remembered by many who considered her family including the Hadland family, the Pasley family, the Christenson family, her dear friends at Special Olympics, Momcat, and a myriad of loving friends. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 15, at 7:00 p.m. at Christus Rex on the University of North Dakota campus. In lieu of flowers donations can be directed to the Circle of Friends Humane Society of Grand Forks or the North Dakota Special Olympics.
