Evelyn Phillips

Evelyn L. Phillips, 85, Grand Forks, ND, formerly of Thompson, ND, died Saturday, December 26, 2009 in 4000 Valley Square - Woodside Village. Evelyn Otto was born April 24, 1924 to Alfred and Augusta (Frederickson) Otto at Crystal, North Dakota. She was raised and educated at Crystal and graduated from Crystal High School. She attended beauty school in Grand Forks and moved to Hensel, North Dakota to work in a beauty parlor. She was united in marriage to Bruce W. Phillips on January 9, 1948 at Hallock, Minnesota. They moved to Thompson, North Dakota where she was employed by the Thompson School as a cook. She established and operated Evelyn's Beauty Shop at Thompson. She moved to Grand Forks in 2000. Evelyn enjoyed volunteer work, including 4-H assistant leader, band boosters, Salvation Army Bell Ringer, Sunshine Band member, Thompson American Legion Auxiliary including selling poppies, and an active member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church at Thompson and the church ladies aid. Evelyn is survived by her daughters, Karen (James) Mengelkoch, Apple Valley, Minnesota, and Sharon (Philip) Caruana, Greenwood, Indiana; grandchildren, and her many friends at Briarwood and the Grand Forks Senior Center. She is preceded in death by her husband Bruce on March 9, 1984, and a brother, Allen Otto. Services: 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 29, 2009 in Amundson Funeral Home, 2975 S. 42nd St., Grand Forks. Visitation: will be 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, December 28, 2009 and one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Interment: Memorial Park South Cemetery, Grand Forks. Memorials: are preferred to Grand Forks Senior Citizens Center or the charity of the donor's choice.
