Leona "KC" Gullekson, 99, Grand Forks, ND and formerly of Beltrami, MN. died Monday, January 25, 2010 in Valley Memorial Home Eldercare of Grand Forks. Leona Mae Carlson was born April 21, 1910, the daughter of Albert and Hilda (Allen) Carlson. As a young child, she moved with her family to Beltrami, MN where she was raised and educated. She began studying piano at age 12. In May of 1930 she completed studies at St. Joseph's Academy, and later studies at MacPhail Music Conservatory in Minneapolis, MN. Leona married Virgil Elmo Rae Gullekson on October 23, 1932 in Fosston, MN. They resided on the Family Farm in Beltrami. Leona was an accomplished musician. She was organist, pianist and choir director at Beltrami United Methodist Church for over 60 years. She played for numerous church and community functions, weddings, and funerals. She had many piano students. Leona enjoyed cooking, sewing and handiwork. Through her gracious hospitality, she hosted many gatherings on the farm. When Virgil Gullekson died in April of 1990, Leona moved to Parkwood Place in Grand Forks where she accompanied the choir and continued serving others. Survivors include daughter, Susan (Robert) Boyson, Rochester, MN; daughter-in-law, Joy Gullekson, Grand Forks; grandchildren, Amy French, Farmington, MN, Justin (Jeanne) Gullekson, Decorah, IA, Robin (Rev Randy) Phillips, Rochester, MN and Dr. Aaron (Jennifer) Boyson, Duluth, MN; 11 great grandchildren; sister, Hazel (Dr. Robert) Berg, St. Paul, MN and several nieces and nephews. Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil; son, Elmo; brothers, Warren, Lester, Carl, Ray and Arlo; sister, Verna.
