Lawrence A. "Bud" Mitchell, 82, of Grand Forks, died on September 1, 2010 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks. Lawrence was born on August 3, 1928 in Grand Forks, the son of Chester and Clara (Tharoldson) Mitchell. Bud's father lived in Dunseith, ND, while his mother lived at nearby San Haven with Tuberculosis. By the time Bud was 13, he had been to 7 foster homes. Clara died in 1937 and Bud was returned to Grand Forks to live with relatives. Bud served during WWII and the Korean War with the US Army, earning a Bronze Star. He was very proud of his service to his country. Bud operated a mechanics shop in Grand Forks for many years. He drove truck, worked as a carpenter, was a Grand Forks Police Officer and Chief of Police in Emerado, ND. He was an avid historian and in 1997 donated many historic photos to the Grand Forks Herald. Bud enjoyed remodeling cars back in his day. He also loved to write down medical remedies for ailments. Bud is survived by many friends and was well liked and respected by all who knew him.
