Herman Arthur Moe

Herman Arthur Moe succumbed to brain cancer on Sunday, September 5, 2010 at the Northwood Deaconess Health Center in Northwood, North Dakota. Herman was born in Mayville, North Dakota on November 23, 1940, to Henry and Alpha (Rockne) Moe. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith and was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Grand Forks, North Dakota. He graduated from Mayville High School in 1958, received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1962 from Mayville State College, and earned his Masters of Music in Education degree in 1966 from the University of North Dakota. On August 19, 1967, Herman married Doris Syverud in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota. They were both instrumental music teachers.. He taught in Neche and Thompson, ND prior to beginning to teach in the Grand Forks School system in 1966. He continued to teach there until his retirement in 1998. Herman and Doris raised two children, William and Barbra. They enjoyed camping, fishing, and traveling throughout the United States and they set up their Coleman tent in every state west of the Mississippi. Herman served in the North Dakota Army National Guard for four years, was a Boy Scout troop leader, a member of the Elks Lodge, Grand Forks Education Association, North Dakota Music Educators Association, and the North Dakota Education Association. He played trombone in the Elks Band, Grand Forks City Band, Greater Grand Forks Symphony Orchestra, and the Dick King Swing Band. His favorite pastimes were working (chopping wood, mowing lawn, building fences) at the family farm near Mayville, fishing, camping and reading. Herman is survived by his wife Doris, son William (Bonnie) of Rochester, MN, daughter Barbra Scharber of Rogers, MN, and grandchildren: Katrina, Isabella and Olivia Moe and Jacob Scharber. Also surviving are sister Evelyn (Richard Felton) Pederson of Grand Forks, brothers Eugene (Mary) of Nevis, MN, John (Mitchie) of Federal Way, WA, Charles (Shirley) of Vining, MN, Thomas (Susan Johnson) of Mayville; father-in-law Arthur Syverud of Blooming Prairie, MN, brother-in-law Roger (Bettie) Syverud of Arden Hills, MN, sisters-in-law Joanne (David) Shaw of Castro Valley, CA and Janice (Michael) Kohlrusch of Circle Pines, MN; several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Richard, mother-in-law Mildred Syverud, and all of his aunts and uncles. Memorials contributions are preferred to NDAD, the Grand Forks Public Library, or a charity of your choice. MEMORIAL SERVICE: Saturday, September 11, 2010, 11:00 A.M. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church 715 24th Ave. S. Grand Forks, ND. VISITATION: One hour prior to the memorial service at the church. INTERMENT: Mayville City Cemetery, Mayville, ND.
