Evelyn Lorraine Lanes died at home on Friday, Nov. 5, 2010. She was born on October 15, 1924, in Grand Forks, to Erling Trondsen Svaren and Lillie Ackerson Svaren of Niagara, ND. She was baptized into the family of God on September 11, 1925, and confirmed at Elk Valley Lutheran Church on June 28, 1936. Evelyn graduated from high school in Niagara and received a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Mayville State Teachers College. During college, she spent one summer working in a WWII defense plant in Detroit, MI. She taught business education in Devils Lake and Grafton, ND. She married Donald Gordon Lanes of Grafton, ND, on May 26, 1948 in Crookston, MN. They initially lived in Grafton and moved to Grand Forks in 1957. Evelyn was a long-time employee of Minnkota Power in Grand Forks. She was an active member of Calvary Lutheran Church and Gyda Varden Lodge of Sons of Norway. Evelyn was a lifelong fisherwoman and stamp collector. She was an avid bird-watcher and an accomplished knitter. Many grandchildren and great-grandchildren are still warmed by the hats and scarves she made in her later years. Evelyn and Don had four children, Phyllis Johnson (Robert), Grand Forks; Audrey Arguijo (Pete), Pleasanton, TX; Ruth Rutten (Leo), Harvey, ND; and Richard Lanes (Tami), Grand Forks. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and a sister, husband Donald, son Richard, and son-in-law Robert Johnson. She is survived by her three daughters, sister, Doris Johnson of Grafton, fourteen grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may be given to Calvary Lutheran Church or Meals on Wheels at the Grand Forks Senior Citizens Center. FUNERAL SERVICES: 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at Calvary Lutheran Church 1405 S. 9th St. in Grand Forks. VISITATION: 6:00-8:00 p.m. with a 7:45 p.m. prayer service Monday, November 8, at Amundson Funeral Home 2975 S. 42nd St. Grand Forks, ND INTERMENT: 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at Grafton Lutheran Cemetery in Grafton, ND.
