Richmond Day

Richmond A. "Dick" Day, 102, of Grand Forks, ND passed away Friday, November 12, 2010 at 10:00 PM in Grand Forks. He was born September 3, 1908 in Providence, RI to William and Lottie Day. His education included Technical High School and Brown University where he graduated with a ScB degree in Mechanical Engineering, Class of 1931. At the bottom of the Great Depression, he went to work for the U. S. Rubber Company. In 1935 he joined the Providence Lithograph Co. as an estimator. In 1935, he volunteered for the U. S. Navy and was given a commission as Lt(jg) in the supply corps. His first tour of duty was Pearl Harbor where he was assigned to the freight office. From Pearl Harbor, he was ordered to the Navy Overseas Freight Terminal in San Francisco where he was assigned as Officer in charge of Fleet Freight. He was a supply officer until he had completed 20 years and 3 months was transferred to retired status. In 1949, he and his wife adopted a 3 month little girl, Peg. Retiring at age 60, Richmond and his wife devoted their time to their hobby, international travel. They traveled to 87 countries, the Arctic and the Antarctic. He was very active in his life as indicated by the following: 3 years City of Cranston, RI Fuel Ration Board, 3 years teaching first aid for the American Red Cross, 8 years issuing gate passes at Davis Monthan Air Force Base of Tucson, AZ, 8 years receptionist for Dak-Minn Blood Bank, Life member of the Appalachian Mountain Club, life member of the U. S. Naval Institute, life member of Reserve Officers Association, life member of the Navy League of the U.S., Past President and Honorary Member of the Providence Arts Association, Past President R.I. Preceptory of the Rhode Island Legion of Honor Order of DeMolay, Past Vice President and Secretary Director of Providence Lithograph, Past National Director of U. S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, Retired Navy Officer - Lcdr(SSC) USN, plank owner - U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington DC, member Honolulu Lodge F&AM, retired organist an choirmaster of Trinity Church, Scituate, RI for 40 years and a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Grand Forks. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Earle S. Day, and by his wife Josephine. Survivors include his daughter, Peg (Randall) Maring, Grand Forks; granddaughter, Amy Fettig, Seattle, WA; grandson, Jeffrey Donovan Schmidt, Fargo, ND and 2 great granddaughters, Morgan Paige Fettig and Madison Janae Fettig, both of Seattle; niece, Priscilla Day Garrison; nephew, William Day.
