Doreen Ann Whetzel, 76, of Grand Forks died January 16 at her home, surrounded by her family, after a long and courageous battle with a lung disease. Doreen was born August 2, 1934 to William and Violet (Cassidy) Engel in Fargo, ND where she attended 12 years of school. She also attended college at Moorhead State University. Doreen married Don Whetzel on February 22, 1957 in Sisseton, SD. She and Don moved to Grand Forks, ND in 1964 where they made their home. Doreen will be fondly remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She lived life to its fullest and was known to approach everything she did with a certain amount of enthusiasm. She especially enjoyed spending time camping at the lake with her family. She was able to spend several winters in Arizona where she developed an even larger network of friends. She was known as an exceptional baker and homemaker, and as an avid and accomplished bowler in the Grand Forks Women leagues. Left to mourn her passing are her husband, Don; one daughter, DeeAnn (Scott) Peterson of Harvey, ND, and two sons Derek (Lori) Whetzel of Mayville, ND, and Donn Whetzel of Grand Forks, ND; grandchildren, Daniel, Michael, Matthew, Cassandra, Gregory (Lindsay), Zachary, Kristine (Gail), Derek Jr., Kylie, Nicole, Amber, and Jade; great grandchildren Dominic, Dana, Dakota, Makenna, MacKenzie, Quinn, Breckin, Ava, and Alek. She was preceded in death by her son Dana, her parents and brothers, Gene and Allen. FUNERAL SERVICES: 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 20, 2011 at Redeemer Lutheran Church 815 20th St. N. in Grand Forks. VISITATION: Wednesday, January 19, 2011 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. with a 6:45 p.m. time for sharing memories and a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at Redeemer Lutheran Church. Visitation will continue for the hour prior to the funeral at the church. INTERMENT: (Spring 2011) Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Hillsboro, ND.
