Alice Paige Sheppard

November 5, 1916 — February 11, 2011

Alice Paige Sheppard, age 94, died on Friday, February 11, 2011 at Altru Hospital after suffering a stroke at her residence at Parkwood Place in Grand Forks. She was born on November 5, 1916, in Forest River, North Dakota, the daughter of Frank and Genevieve Lowe Paige. She attended school at Wibaux, Montana, and after her father's death in 1923 moved to Grand Forks. She attended school in Grand Forks until her graduation in 1938 from the University of North Dakota with a degree in home economics and education. Alice taught home economics in the Minnesota communities of Belgrade, Worthington and East Grand Forks, and in Grand Forks at South Junior High and Central High School until her retirement from teaching in 1981. She married Wyman Sheppard in 1944 in Grand Forks. The family lived adjacent to Wy's Garden Center in East Grand Forks until moving to Grand Forks in 1958. Alice owned and operated Wy's Floral from 1980 to 1991. Alice was a member of Pi Beta Phi, Pi Lambda Theta, PEO and First Presbyterian Church in Grand Forks. In 2008 she was inducted into the Grand Forks Teachers Hall of Fame. She is predeceased by her husband, K. Wyman Sheppard. Surviving her are her son, Robert (Susan) Sheppard; daughter Jean (Kirk) Hallahan, Fort Collins, Colorado; and 3 grandsons, Sabin (Rayna) Sheppard, Nathan (Lisa) Sheppard and Steve McKewin. Also two granddaughters, Jenna Hallahan and Hannah (Todd Kvasager) Sheppard, and five great grandchildren. Alice could teach basic life skills to any young person; how to sew or fix clothes, navigate fearlessly in the kitchen, become a family's favorite babysitter or care for your own child, and manage money wisely. She enjoyed her student teachers as much as her students. She frequently took struggling teens under her wing, and on occasion into her home, and was a friend to many during the challenge of growing up and learning to make healthy choices. Her family and friends were blessed by her patience, wisdom and gentle, caring friendship. Visitation will be held 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feburary 13, 2011 in Amundson Funeral Home, 2975 S. 42nd St., Grand Forks. Funeral Services will be Monday, February 14, at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 5555 S. Washington. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Grand Forks at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be sent to the Sheppard Landscaping Fund or Kids in Need (KIN) at First Presbyterian Church in Grand Forks.
