Matthew Malm

November 27, 1961 — February 15, 2011

Matthew Wade Malm was born on November 27th, 1961 in Climax, MN and died in his home on February 15th, 2011. The Hebrew and English origin of the name Matthew means "Gift of God" and Matt was truly a gift to so many. Matt was a son, brother, high school sweetheart, husband, father, uncle, teacher, coach, and my best friend. Matt loved his children with all his heart and not a day went by without a mention of Jake and his "Bear" (Aly). In September of 2009, Matt was diagnosed with brain cancer, which over time gradually changed his healthy mind and body but never his sense of humor, positive attitude, and amazing sense of calm. Matt expressed his gratitude for the smallest of things and when asked how he was doing, responded, "I'm fine" or "It is what it is". The words "cherish each day" take on a whole new meaning when you see someone you love struggle so. My message to all is to cherish the moments with those you love and find joy, laughter, and something to celebrate each and every day. Let us celebrate Matt as he will be forever in our hearts. Roanne Matt is survived by wife, Roanne (Lee) Malm, Grand Forks, ND; daughter, Aly Malm, Grand Forks, ND; son, Jake Malm, Minneapolis, MN; parents, Carol and Gary Malm, Grand Forks, ND; sister, Patty (Ken) Dorsher; brother, Perry (Liz) Malm, Grand Forks, ND; sister, Erika (Cordell) Dietz, North Oakes, MN; and, grandmother, Helen Estenson, Crookston, MN. Matt is preceded in death by uncle, Lionel Estenson; grandparents Theodore and Marie Morken, Alfred and Hilma Malm, and Ordean Estenson; and, father Wayne Dennis Estenson. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials be dedicated to South Middle School, Calvary Lutheran Church, or Altru Hospice. Memorial Service: 4 p.m. Sunday, February 20, 2011 at Calvary Lutheran Church, 1405 S. 9th St., Grand Forks. Visitation: 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Calvary Lutheran Church.
