Helen Burkland, age 99, died Wednesday, May 4, 2011 in 4000 Valley Square, Grand Forks. Helen Kjemhus was born to Herbrand and Mary (Evenson) Kjemhus on January 19, 1912 in Fairfield Township of Grand Forks County. Helen was baptized at the Washington Church near Northwood and confirmed at Evanger Lutheran Church. She attended Fairfield School near Emerado and Allendale School near Grand Forks. Helen and Milton J. Burkland were united in marriage on August 25, 1935. They farmed in Brenna Township of Grand Forks County. Helen was a member of Evanger Lutheran Church and participated in the Ladies Aide and sang in the church choir. She was a member of Bethesda Society, Sons of Norway, and Brenna Homemakers Club. Milton and Helen also enjoyed belonging to the Belles and Bows square dancing group for many years. She is survived by her children, Darrell (Nancy) Burkland, Fargo, Carol Lorentz, Medina, OH, and David (Jennifer) Burkland, Rural Grand Forks. She was a loving grandmother to John (Eileen) Lorentz of Edina, MN, Dr. Sara (Dr. Anthony) Prusinski of Medina, OH, Maria (Dr. John) Balintona of Farmington, NM, Melissa Burkland (Dr. Grant Syverson) of Milwaukee, WI, Caroline Burkland, Emily Burkland and Paul Ralston, all of Grand Forks. Great Grandmother to Ana Balintona, Olivia and David Lorentz, Anthony and Roman Prusinski, and Isaac Syverson. She is preceded in death by her husband Milton Burkland, her parents, sisters Sarah, Martha, and Evelyn, brothers Knute and Elmer, and son-in-law, Harvey Lorentz. Funeral Services: 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 9, 2011 in Evanger Lutheran Church, Rural Grand Forks. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. Prayer Service Sunday, May 8, 2011 in Amundson Funeral Home, 2975 S. 42nd St., Grand Forks and one hour prior to the service in the church. Interment: Evanger Lutheran Cemetery
