Emil Sommerfeld

Emil Sommerfeld, 84, of Grand Forks, ND passed away Saturday, July 23, 2011 at Valley Memorial Home Woodside Village, Grand Forks. Emil was born September 3, 1926 at home, the 12th of 13 children to Emil G. and Bertha (Brede) Sommerfeld. He attended school in Whitman, ND and graduated from Michigan High School in 1945. Emil enlisted in the U.S. Army on September 23, 1945 and was honorably discharged as a PFC on May 5, 1947. He worked in various labor positions until retiring from American Crystal Sugar in East Grand Forks, MN. Emil married Darlyne Iverson on September 22, 1979 at University Lutheran Church in Grand Forks. They made their home in Grand Forks. They enjoyed dancing and traveling together. Emil is survived by his wife, Darlyne; sisters, Anna (William) Kutz, Duluth, GA and Ruth White, Cleveland, OH; sisters-in-law, Sylvia (Albert) Sommerfeld, Port Angeles, WA and Joyce (Victor) Sommerfeld, Michigan, ND along with several nieces and nephews. Emil was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Richard, Walter, George, Herbert, Albert, Edward and Victor; sisters, Clara Sommerfeld, Esther Schultz and Frieda MacMurrough. Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, July 27, 2011 in Redeemer Lutheran Church of Grand Forks. Visitation will be for the hour before the service in the church. Burial will be Wednesday at 2:30 PM in the Michigan Cemetery of Michigan, ND.
