Joann Hurley

Joann "Jo" Hurley, 86, of Grand Forks, passed away Wed, July 27 at Valley Eldercare in Grand Forks surrounded by friends and family. Joann Frantz started life in North Manchester, Indiana, born Sept 5, 1924, to Paul and Marie Frantz. Her brothers Donald and Richard (Nancy) Frantz, and sister Nancy Nicholson survive her.. Joann received her nursing degree from Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit during WW II. She married a Marine Pilot 1st Lt. Charles Hurley in 1946. They lived in Grand Forks, Marion, and Devils Lake ND, before settling for good in Grand Forks. Charles retired from teaching chemistry at GF Central in 1985 and suddenly passed away in 1986. Joann loved geriatric nursing and was the Director of Nursing at Valley Memorial Almonte for 26 years, retiring in 1989. Retired didn't mean inactive for Joann as she traveled the world, biking and exploring many countries and serving on many mission trips. Her lake cabin at Maple Lake served as the site for summer family gatherings, and her home on Belmont Road was where family holidays were celebrated. Especially important to her was membership in Zion United Methodist Church where she was on many committees to serve her community and church and a member of Miriam Circle. She was a longtime season ticket holder and big fan of UND hockey. Her friends, scrabble and card groups, and PEO sisters meant a lot to her. Her radiant smile and endearing laugh was always with her. Jo was a friendly, cheerful, optimistic woman with a special way of making everyone feel welcome. She is survived by the families of five sons. Michael, of Grand Forks, his 3 daughters, Vicki (Earnest) Washington, Ruby (Chris) Carter, and Donna (Matt) Mulock, son Marlyn and grandchildren Onyx, Charles, Veronica (deceased), Naomi, Kevin Lommen, Kirsten, Casey, and great grand children Brooklyn, Kailen, and Selena. Timothy, of Sioux Falls SD has two sons Kevin and Ryan and his special friend, Rachel McCracken. Patric (Linda) of East Grand Forks and sons Patrick (Terra), and Mark (Staci), and granddaughter Hazel. Charles, of Bloomington MN. John, (Roxanne), of Grand Forks.have daughters Katelyn (Josh) Salwey and Laura. Other surviving relatives include brother in law, Lawrence (Helen) Hurley and sister in law, Ada Mcleod and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles, her very special friend, Norman Neumann, sister in law, Jody Frantz, brother in laws James Nicholson and Walter Mcleod and grandchild, Veronica Hurley.
