Donald G. Amundson, 81, of Manvel, ND passed away Tuesday, September, 6, 2011 in Valley Eldercare Center, Grand Forks, ND, surrounded by his family and friends. Donald Glen Amundson was born September 12, 1929 near Manvel, ND, the son of Amund and Helen (Nelson) Amundson. Donald graduated from Manvel High School in 1947 and attended NDSU in Fargo. Donald worked on the family farm until being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951. He was then honorably discharged in 1952 because his brother Kenneth had a farm accident. Donald pursued his farming career at the age of 24 in partnership with his brother Kenneth and the help of his parents and family. He purchased 120 acres and built his farming operation to 5000 acres. He retired in 1994 but continued to mow and care for his C.R.P. until 2009. Donald loved the outdoors and the challenges of farming. He was an excellent farmer and steward of the land. Don was a member of the Manvel Trinity Lutheran Church, the Manvel Senior Citizens Center, the Grand Forks Senior Citizen Center for ten years, the East Grand Forks VFW and the Manvel American Legion. He was baptized and confirmed in Middle Grove Lutheran Church of rural Manvel. Don also enjoyed attending area auction sales, visiting with everyone and playing cards and bingo at the Grand Forks Senior Center. He took trips to Las Vegas, NV and the casino in Mahnomen. Don loved riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle and in later years he collected and remodeled 24 antique tractors. He will be greatly missed. Donald is survived by: Sisters: Gladys Gleason - Grand Forks (who came home from California in 1998 to care for Donald because he had diabetes) LaVerne Hall - East Grand Forks Cousin: Lyle (Irene) Nelson - Fordville and Seguin, TX Wilma Bullock - Limon, CO Many second cousins Nieces and nephews: Carolyn (Scott Redman - Chicago, IL; Charlene (Rick) Leibold - Edina, MN; Bruce and Brent Amundson - Albuquerque, NM; Debra (John) Magers - Denver, CO ; Scott Amundson - Oakland, CA; Eric Redman - Chicago, IL; Glen (Jaclyn) Redman - Minneapolis, MN; Andrea (Nate) Green - Washington D.C.; Jacob Leibold - New York and Colin Leibold - San Diego, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Floyd; sister-in-law Marlys Amundson and brother Kenneth Amundson. Funeral services will be Saturday, September 10, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Manvel, ND. Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 7 PM with a 7PM prayer service at Amundson Funeral Home, 2975 South 42nd St., Grand Forks. Interment will be in the Middle Grove Cemetery, rural Manvel, ND.
