Donald (Don) Bostrom, 79, of Grand Forks, ND. died Thursday, September 8, 2011, at Valley Memorial's Woodside Village Hearthstone Unit. Don was born May 19, 1932 in Grand Forks, ND, the son of Edwin A and Hazel (Glass) Bostrom. He grew up in Grand Forks and graduated from Central High School in 1950. In 1954, he graduated from UND with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce and in 1957, with a Master of Arts. Both degrees included a major in accounting. He earned a PhD in Accounting from the University of North Texas in Denton in 1974. He was drafted during the Korean War and served two years in the army in Garmisch, Germany. Don was a Certified Public Accountant in North Dakota and Texas. He held professional auditing positions with both the U.S. General Accounting Office and Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Company. Before joining the faculty at UND, he taught at The University of Texas in Austin and Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. Don was a professor in the Department of Accounting at UND and retired in 1996 after 27 years of service. He enjoyed a strong personal rapport with his students and worked tirelessly on their behalf. Don received three Instructor of the Year awards from Beta Alpha Psi the National Scholastic Honorary in Business. He was very active in service to the University and to the Accounting Profession and held offices at both state and national levels. In 2006, the North Dakota Society of CPAs honored him with a Life Membership. Don married Joy Wardner on August 23, 1958 in Grand Forks, ND. He enjoyed travel, especially visiting children and grandchildren in Texas. He was a devoted family man and will be greatly missed by them. Don was a member of a number of professional organizations, Grace Baptist Church and Franklin Club. He is survived by his wife, Joy; sons, Douglas (Paula), Allen, TX; David, Austin, TX; two grandchildren, Jonathan and Hope, Allen, TX; sister-in-law, Shirley Bostrom, Grand Forks, and several nieces and nephews. In Lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to either the Valley Memorial Home Hearthstone unit or the Chaplaincy Program.
