Howard Skjervem

Howard M. Skjervem, 81, Grand Forks, formerly of Dahlen, North Dakota, passed away Tuesday, October 18, 2011 in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks. Howard Milton Skjervem was born July 24, 1930 in Dahlen, North Dakota to Marie and Henry Skjervem. He was baptized by his grandfather, Rev. H.C. Olson at the Middle Forest River Church and was confirmed by the Rev. Haatvidt in the Dahlen Lutheran Church. He attended school in Dahlen and was active in sports. Howard graduated from high school in 1948. In September, 1952, he was called to serve in the US Army and was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma for two years. Sgt. Skjervem worked in battalion supply. When he was discharged in September, 1954, Howard returned to Dahlen to work with his father. Howard purchased the Dahlen Auto and Machine Co. from his dad in 1958. He lived in the family home and cared for both parents in their declining years, so they were able to remain in their home. Howard was active in church and community affairs and was a lifelong member of the Dahlen Lutheran Church. He served on the church council, was church ushering chairman, served on the Board of Directors of the Fire Department and was a volunteer fireman. His hobbies were golfing and bowling. Howard won the Eastern Half State Legion Tournament in 1985 and placed second at the State Bowl-Off. Howard retired in 1994 and moved to Grand Forks where he has resided. Howard is survived by a sister, Arlene Skjervem of Grand Forks; two nephews, James Skjervem of Sierra Vista, AZ and Mark (Janie) Skjervem of Los Angeles, CA; two great-nephews, Ian, and Samuel, both of Los Angeles, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Carmen and his first wife, Shirley and second wife, Carlene, Cheyenne, WY. Memorial Services: 11:00 a.m. Monday in Dahlen Lutheran Church with visitation one hour prior to the service in the church. Interment will be in Zion Cemetery near Dahlen.
