John Campbell

John Angus Campbell, 96, of Grand Forks, ND, passed away November 1, 2011 at Prairieview Woodside Village, Valley 4000. John was born November 29, 1914 near Aneta, ND the son of Angus and Helen (Peterson) Campbell. As a young boy, he moved with his family to Egeland, ND, where he graduated from High School in 1932. John attended North Dakota State University graduating in 1939 with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Education. After graduation he taught Vocational Agriculture in Hunter, ND for three years. In October 1942 he was inducted into the Army and served in the Personnel Division until 1945 when he received his honorable discharge. He then taught in Bottineau, ND until June 1946 when he rented the Lilac Hedge Farm, rural Grand Forks, which he later purchased from Anne and Julius Bacon. During his early years at the farm, he also taught at the Agricultural College in Crookston, MN. John was united in marriage to Irene Isabelle Running on June 6, 1943 at West Union Church, rural Northwood, ND. John and Irene made their home and farmed on the Lilac Hedge Farm for 58 years before moving to Wheatland Terrace, 4000 Valley Square, Grand Forks in November 2004.John served as Clerk of Falconer Township for several years, and on the Grand Forks Planning and Zoning Commission. He was also a member of Golden K Kiwanis serving as President. For over twenty years, John and Irene spent winters in Harlingen, TX where they enjoyed square and round dancing. They were members of Shirts and Skirts square dance club. John is survived by his wife of 68 years, Irene; children: Ina Jane (Ardell) Korynta, Grand Forks, ND; Jon (Carol) Campbell, Aneta, ND; and Don (Priscilla) Campbell, Grand Forks, ND; eight grandchildren; three great granddaughters; brother Wallace Campbell, California; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Duncan Campbell, and four sisters, Perl, Ruby, Lavina, and Erma. Funeral Services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, November 5, 2011 in United Lutheran Church of Grand Forks, ND. Visitation will be for the hour before the service in the church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery of Grand Forks, ND. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #157, The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3817 and the North Dakota Army National Guard.
