Charles C. Carpenter, 86, Grand Forks, died Friday, February 24, 2012 at Valley Memorial Homes Eldercare Center after a brief battle with lung cancer. Charles Calvin Carpenter was born in Byron Township, Cavalier County, North Dakota on February 28, 1925 to John and Ada (Mumby) Carpenter. He attended school at Hannah, North Dakota. Charles graduated from Mayville State College with a Bachelors Degree in Education and later from UND with a Masters Degree in Administration. Charles served in the US Navy from 1943 to 1946. Charles Carpenter and Alice Nelson were united in marriage on June 12, 1949 at Langdon, North Dakota. They resided in numerous communities in North Dakota and Minnesota. He began his career as a math teacher at Munich, North Dakota and concluded his career as school superintendent at Neche, North Dakota. Following his retirement they moved back to Munich and have lived in Grand Forks for the past 10 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and reading. Mr. Carpenter was a member of the American Legion. He is survived by his wife, Alice, Grand Forks; sons, Douglas (Cindy) Carpenter, Grand Forks, Clayton (Melody) Carpenter, Phoenix, Arizona; grandchildren, Anna (Nick) Freeman, Sara Carpenter, Benjamin Carpenter, Dakota Carpenter, Artem Carpenter, Andrey, Carpenter; sisters, Kathleen Johnston, Langdon, ND, Mary (Clinton) Neff, McClusky, ND, Shirley Peterson, Mayville, ND. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and an infant sister. The family wishes to extend their special thanks and appreciation to Altru Cancer Center, Altru Hospice and Valley Memorial Homes Transitional Care Unit. Funeral Services: 3:30 Wednesday, February 29, 2012 in Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1720 Cherry St., Grand Forks. Visitation: one hour prior to the service in the church. Interment: Memorial Park South Cemetery, Grand Forks Memorials: are preferred to Immanuel Lutheran Church or the Altru Foundation for Altru Cancer Center.
