Walter L. Winter, 91, East Grand Forks, Minnesota, died Friday, April 13, 2012 in Good Samaritan Heritage Grove, East Grand Forks. Walter L. Winter was born to Cyrus and Anna (Ludemann) Winter on November 4, 1920 at Ventura, Iowa. Walter was raised and educated at Villard, Minnesota. He worked on the family farm until he began service in the US Army Air Corps, and was stationed in England during World War II. He also served during the Korean War. He went on to retire from the US Air Force Reserves in 1980. Walter Winter and Kathleen Trillo were united in marriage on June 18, 1949 at Park Rapids, Minnesota. They lived at Park Rapids, Morris and Villard, Minnesota. Mr. Winter was employed by Cenex of Villard in bulk fuel deliveries. Walter enjoyed reading, gardening, and was a faithful attendee of the Rollag Steam Threshers Reunion. He was a member of the Masons, the VFW, American Legion, and was a charter member of the Air Force Association. He served on the board of directors of the Glacial Ridge Hospital at Glenwood, Minnesota for 30 years including 2 terms as chairman. He served his city of Villard in many civic positions to include fire chief and mayor. He also served on the Pope County Historical Society Board and was Master of the Lodge of Sincerity Lodge 161 of the Order of the Free Masons for seven terms. Walter and Kathleen moved to East Grand Forks in March, 2009. Walter is survived by his wife, Kathleen, East Grand Forks; his children, Hazel Lehman (Bob), Bob Winter (Jane), and John Winter (Mary Beth), all of Grand Forks; daughter-in-law, Betty Winter, Grand Forks; grandchildren, Darren, Andrea (Nathan), Tim, Craig (Stephanie), Jennifer, Christopher (Nicole), and Joshua; great-grandchildren, Shiloh, Hannah, Corban, Kaitlyn,and Logan; a sister, Hazel Krueger (Bud), Morris, Minnesota. He is preceded in death by his parents; a son, Mike Winter; brothers, Fred and Wesley; and a sister, Evelyn; great-granddaughter, Sasha. Service of Remembrance: 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 16, 2012 in Good Samaritan Maple Grove Chapel, 2122 River Road NW, East Grand Forks, MN. Visitation: will be for one hour prior to the service Monday in the chapel. A Memorial Service and Interment in Lake Leven Cemetery with Military Honors will be held in Villard, Minnesota on Friday, April 20, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Villard United Methodist Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
