Jean Jensen

Jean Jensen, 87, of Grand Forks, formerly of Cavalier and Edinburg, ND passed away peacefully, Thursday, April 12, 2012, at the Northwood Deaconess Health Center in Northwood, ND. Martha Jean Myrdal was born near Gardar, North Dakota to Einar and Sophie (Bergmann) Myrdal. Jean attended school in Gardar and moved with her family to Edinburg in 1931. Jean graduated from Edinburg High School in 1942. She attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. She played the French horn in Concordia's Concert Band. She graduated magna cum laude in 1946 with a bachelor of arts in home economics and a minor in chemistry. Jean taught high school home economics at Elbow Lake, MN for 2 years. Then she was county Home Extension Agent for Yellow Medicine County and lived in Clarkfield, MN. She returned to Edinburg and married Clarence Jensen on November 10th, 1951 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Edinburg. They made their home in Edinburg until 1960 when they moved to Cavalier. Clarence operated the Jensen Funeral Home and Jean assisted in many clerical duties. Jean was an active member of United Lutheran Church in Cavalier. She was president of WELCA, a Sunday School teacher, participated in many activities. Jean was also a Cub Scout Den Mother, 4-H leader, President of Pembina County Memorial Hospital's Auxiliary, and was active in many community organizations. Jean and Clarence retired in 1985. They enjoyed eleven winters in Mesa Arizona where she began painting with watercolors. Clarence passed away on October 20th, 2001. Jean moved to Parkwood Place in Grand Forks in 2007. She joined Calvary Lutheran Church in Grand Forks. Jean moved to Northwood Deaconess Health Center on December 30, 2011. Jean especially enjoyed time with family. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, and playing the piano. Jean wrote three books of family history. She published the Myrdal Family History in 1986, the Bergmann Family history in 1993, and the Jensen Family history in 2006. Jean is survived by: one daughter, Colleen (Ken) Carlson, Grand Forks, four sons: Harlan (Barb Graham), and Warren (Cindy) , of Grand Forks, Russell of Hinsdale, Illinois, and Allen (Connie) of New Prague, MN; ten grandchildren: Michael Jensen, Nicholas (Sarah) Jensen, Bethany (Derek) Boman, Philip Jensen, Andy Jensen, Kyle Jensen, Scott Jensen, Katie Jensen, Ross Carlson, and Claire Carlson: one great grandson, Axel Boman. She is also survived by two brothers: Don (Lillian) Myrdal of Buffalo, MN, and Robert (Sue) Myrdal of San Carlos, California, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Clarence in 2001, a daughter-in-law, Karen Jensen, in 1999, and a sister-in-law, Florence Myrdal in 1989. In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts to the charity of your choice. FUNERAL SERVICES: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, Calvary Lutheran Church, Grand Forks VISITATION: 5:00-7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Monday, April 16 at Amundson Funeral Home 2975 S. 42nd St. Grand Forks, ND. The visitation will continue for the hour prior to the funeral service at the church. INTERMENT: Cavalier Cemetery, Cavalier, ND.
