Eve Ethel Freeberg

Eve Freeberg, 74, of Grand Forks, died Friday, May 18, 2012 at Valley Eldercare Center in Grand Forks. Eve was born June 8, 1937 in Seymour, Wisconsin, where she graduated from Seymour High School. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from North Central College, Naperville, Illinois. Additional work was completed at the University of Colorado and the University of Washington. Her career as a teacher began in southern Wisconsin before being selected for service with Overseas Dependent Schools in Kaiserslautern, Germany where she met Bob Freeberg (deceased). After marriage in 1965, Eve and Bob lived in Jamestown, ND before settling in Grand Forks where Eve commuted to Oslo, MN for many years of teaching in the Oslo school. Beginning in 1987, Eve combined her science teaching with the hobby of bird watching under the mentorship of Dave Lambeth. She observed birds in eastern North Dakota, especially in Grand Forks County, and submitted her records to American Birds, a publication of the American Birding Association. Her contributions to knowledge of North Dakota birds included several first state records and numerous earliest and latest dates for occurrence of various species, along with record peak numbers. For twelve years, she ran up to seven annual Breeding Bird Surveys in North Dakota and Minnesota. Eve served the North Dakota Birding Society as president for three years and also as secretary. Eve was a regular participant in the Grand Forks-East Grand Forks Christmas Bird Count. Eve is survived by her daughter Dawn Espindola (David) and grandchildren Kayla and Andre (Eden Prairie, MN); and a sister, Jean Schmidt (Fort Lee, NJ). She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Robert; brother, Calvin. Memorials are preferred to Altru Hospice or a charity of your choice. MEMORIAL SERVICE: 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 25, 2012 at Sharon Lutheran Church 1720 S. 20th St. in Grand Forks. VISITATION: 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 25 at Sharon Lutheran Church.
