Donald Eklund

Donald Eklund, 66, formerly of Reynolds, ND died April 8, 2012 in Benedictine Health Center of Minneapolis, MN Family and friends recently hounored the life of Donald Leon Eklund. The Celebration of Life marked the achievements of Mr. Eklund with displays of his many awards. His life story was told in both electronic and visual presentations. An active L.I.S.T.E.N participant he began his involvement early in his life with various sports activities. The sports offered an outlet for his abilities and an opportunity to form lasting friendships. He participated in the North Dakota Special Olympics events from the 1980s through the 1990s. At the 1984 State Basketball Tournament he earned medals in both basketball and relay. He bowled actively from 1984 to 1999 a time period in which the team added many trophies to their credits. His most prized bowling award was the platform presentation of a first place gold medal complete with a blue ribbon. The award was earned at the State Special Olympics. Mr. Eklund lived in Grand Forks during the last decade of his life having spent his earlier years with his parents at a farm near Reynolds, North Dakota. His parent preceded him in death. An aficionado of western history he was well versed in the settling of the West adding to his knowledge through the writing of Louis L'Amour. Born of a generation that believed in patriotism and fairness his simple trust was well represented by cowboys who "wore white hats". To him doing right was the only way. He will be remembered for his acceptance of all, his love of children and babies and his kind demeanor. His gentle ways and loving acceptance of all people were a lesson to all. He truly demonstrated that the gift of the human spirit knows no boundaries.
