She graduated from Grafton High School and attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, where she studied to become an elementary school teacher and received her Bachelor of Science Degree in 1958. After graduating, Jean moved to Grand Forks, where she taught at Lewis and Clark Elementary School and was honored as Outstanding Young Educator by the Grand Forks Jaycees in 1968. During the 1970s, Jean focused on her role as a mother and wife while staying engaged with the educational field as she supervised student teachers at UND and helped author the Basal Reader for the Macmillan Reading Program. In 1984, Jean returned to the teaching field as a 4th grade teacher at Wilder Elementary School, where she remained until her retirement in 1996.
