Jean Elizabeth Hollenbeck, 77, of Grand Forks died peacefully on Monday, June 4, 2012 at Woodside Village Nursing Home in Grand Forks. Jean was born April 29, 1935 on the Torkelson family farm home near Grafton, ND. She graduated from Grafton High School and attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, where she studied to become an elementary school teacher and received her Bachelor of Science Degree in 1958. After graduating, Jean moved to Grand Forks, where she taught at Lewis and Clark Elementary School and was honored as Outstanding Young Educator by the Grand Forks Jaycees in 1968. During the same year, she achieved her Master of Education Degree from the University of North Dakota, and it was at UND that she met her future husband, Robert. The two were married in 1969. During the 1970s, Jean focused on her role as a mother and wife while staying engaged with the educational field as she supervised student teachers at UND and helped author the Basal Reader for the Macmillan Reading Program. In 1984, Jean returned to the teaching field as a 4th grade teacher at Wilder Elementary School, where she remained until her retirement in 1996. At that time, a scholarship in her name was established by the staff and PTO. Following her teaching retirement, she worked seasonally at H&R Block and remained fully engaged in many aspects of Calvary Lutheran Church. Jean is survived by her son Craig (Molly), Minneapolis, MN; sister Joyce Miller, Grand Forks; and a loving group of cousins, friends and other family. She was preceded in death by her parents, mother Ella (Brende) Torkelson, father, Leonard Torkelson and husband, Robert Hollenbeck. Memorials will be donated to Calvary Lutheran Church. FUNERAL SERVICES: 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 8, Calvary Lutheran Church 1405 9th St. S. in Grand Forks VISITATION: 5:00-7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Thursday, June 7, at Amundson Funeral Home 2975 S. 42nd St. Grand Forks, ND.
