Mildred C. Granger, 104, of Grand Forks, died Monday, June 4, 2012 at 4000 Valley Square Woodside Village in Grand Forks. Mildred Carolyn Granger was born May 31, 1908, to Peter and Caroline Hedman at the Hedman farm in Walsh County, St. Andrews Township. Mildred grew up on a farm near Drayton, North Dakota. Mildred had to walk across plowed field to go to schooi for her first six years. She played basketball in high school and in college. She graduated from Drayton High school 1925 and received her 2 year teacher's degree at Valley City State Teachers College and BS and MS degrees at the University of North Dakota. Mildred married Allan Granger on June 10, 1930 at the Methodist Church in Drayton, North Dakota. They had three children Elizabeth Ann, Richard Allen Granger and Carolyn Sue. Mildred started her long teaching career at Green School, near Valley City where in 1928 her basketball team won the Barnes County Girls Basketball Tournament. She continued her teaching at District 113, Pembina County, Belmont and Central High Schools in Grand Forks. She taught her last 24 years in East Grand Forks Valley Elementary School where she retired in 1973. Mildred was very active in organizations in Grand Forks. She was honored as a 50 year member of Delta Kappa Gamma International. She is a Past Matron of Eastern Star, past president and active member of Chapter !A, P.E.O Sisterhood, past president of the East Grand Forks MEA, and a member of Pi Lambda Theta. Mildred has been a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Grand Forks since 1943. Mildred enjoyed her 11 grandchildren and 13 great -grandchildren. Mildred has traveled the world. While she has traveled to Scandinavia, Europe, China, Japan, Hong Kong, Morocco, Canada and area of the United States but always enjoyed her time at home on Chestnut St. in Grand Forks. Mildred resided at Parkwood Place in Grand Forks for the past 15 years. She was an avid sports fan. Mildred followed the Sioux hockey team. She and Allan had season tickets for many years. She cheered for the Minnesota Twins, Vikings, and University of Minnesota Gopher Basketball team. She also enjoyed watching Golf. Mildred is survived by her children, Elizabeth Ann (Vartanian, of Palm Desert, CA), Richard Allen Granger(Newhall, CA), and Carolyn Sue (Melby of Garrison, MN); 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband Allan and her brothers Paul Hedman, Carl Hedman, and sisters Helen Hedman and Elizabeth Ann Hedman. FUNERAL SERVICES: 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2012 at Wesley United Methodist Church 1600 4th Ave. N. in Grand Forks. VISITATION: One hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
